   • No problem! I’m sure some of these will show up in my Twitter feed after I find some context for them.

     • Konnichiwa Tae Kim-San! I would have written in Japanese if I could. Sadly, I can’t. Anyway, I just finished reading your book but I can’t seem to find any conversation partners. I don’t have Skype or anything. What should I do?

       • If you can’t use any sort of online talk tool you’ll just have to see if you can find some Japanese speakers in your area.

         • That’s a problem then. No one I know speaks Japanese.

           • That’s where the word “find” comes in. You might want to try meetup.com or meetup site that might be more suited for your area.

   • That depends on your level. I think this can prove particularly useful for advanced learners.

5. I just finished 逆転検事２ a few days ago, and it is definitely one of my Japanese highlights as well. I think I’m going to work my way through the earlier 逆転裁判 games now.

   • 逆転裁判1-3 is pretty good but 逆転検事2 is definitely the best in the series!

6. That is some awesome progress! You have learned quite a lot of words, which proves that no matter how good someone is at something there’s always more to be learnt.

   On another note, how do you keep track of the words that you learn? Do you use a software like Anki for posterior review or do you simply write them into a plain text file?

   • I use Anki only for its syncing feature between my various devices. I don’t do reviews and use only one side of the card.

8. Books are a great source for vocab . Do u read japanese books ?

9. Hmmm some of them I’ve never seen but some of them make me wonder why u found out about them so late. I guess it just depends what u do in japanese

   • Which ones? I am reading books from time to time.

       at least these are definitely more common that the other words in the list & i’m surprised you found out about them now.
       i’ve never heard of most of the words on your list~

       so you’re reviewing the word without definitions/readings etc on the other side? or you’re using it as a way to collect words but not review them? there’s also evernote for syncing.

       • I do see 見栄を張る and 厚かましい pretty often and I know it now but dunno, I guess I just never ran into those words till this year. Yes, just using it as a way to collect words. I tried evernote but didn’t really like the noisy UI.

I use anki but i can only use the one online and can’t open the actual program on the computer (it gives me this stupid error) so i can’t even find out how many words/cards I added this year! ugh it sucks not knowing~~ lol. and i know just because it’s in my deck doesn’t automatically mean i know it but i would ascertain about 80% at least.

    私は大学の四年生です。専門は日本語じゃないですが、キムさんのサイトや他の材料を使って日本語を自習しました。今年、私は初めての日本語で書かれた小説を読むことができました。ちなみに、AmazonのKindleにtxt形式の日本語小説を載せることができます。読みながら、知らない単語をノートに書いてて、少数もキムさんが集めた単語リストにもあります。キムさんのリストはたった四百言葉ぐらい、すごいだと思います。私のAnkiは六百カードぐらいです。（でも、私は中国語を勉強することがあったから、主の場合では日本語の発音を覚えることだけです）

    私は約六年前からキムさんの教科書を読み始めたのです。キムさんの努力を本当に尊敬しています。かなり役に立ちました。無料でネットに乗せてくれてありがとうございました！

12. As someone who’s only been studying for a year and a half, I find it funny that I already have a good amount of these words in my vocab deck. That’s not to say my vocab is massive, but that it seems I have a lot of not so useful words when what I really want is to learn the more general use ones.

    • That’s why I just ignore the actual cards and new words unless I see it more than one time. That’s when they start to stick naturally over time. I don’t remember most of these words but I’ve memorized quite a few words from 2012 such as 観葉植物.

13. Your list is very inspiring. I started learning Japanese after I found out 逆転検事２ wasn’t getting localised; it’s my goal to play it. (Of course, now I have many other goals). After a year of studying, I am able to read manga but there are still so many words I don’t know. The idea of only encountering one new word a day blows my mind. Thanks for the motivation!

14. Huh, wow. I’ve seen at least 7 of those before, though I can only say I know one or two of them. I’ve been studying Japanese for about a year and 5 months now (totaling about 670 hours of active studying, i.e. not counting watching anime. :P). I learned most of my grammar from this website and much of my vocabulary from the Anki “Core 2k/6k Optimized Japanese Vocabulary” deck… 毛皮 is in that deck.
