If you look up \u300c\u5207\u308c\u308b\u300d on Jim Breen’s WWWJDIC, you will get a huge list of definitions:<\/p>\n

\u5207\u308c\u308b \u3010\u304d\u308c\u308b\u3011 (v1) (1) to cut well; to be sharp; (2) to break (off); to snap; to wear out; (3) to be injured; (4) to burst; to collapse; (5) to be disconnected; to be out of; to expire; to sever (connections) with; (6) to be shrewd; to have a sharp mind;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If you’re just starting out, I would NOT recommend using these definitions verbatim. It’s important to see how it’s used in context in order to see the specific types of situations and common particles used together. Let’s take a look at some examples.<\/p>\n

For instance, what if you wanted to say something ran out or expired?<\/p>\n

\uff11\uff09\u96fb\u6c60\u304c\u3082\u3046\u3059\u3050\u5207\u308c\u308b<\/em>\u304b\u3089\u3001\u65b0\u3057\u3044\u306e\u3092\u8cb7\u3063\u305f\u65b9\u304c\u3044\u3044\u3002

Or what if your connection gets cut off such as on the phone?<\/p>\n

You can even use it for when you lose your temper.<\/p>\n

Perhaps, one of the most useful thing about \u300c\u5207\u308c\u308b\u300d is that you can take the negative and use it as a verb suffix for things you can’t cut off and put an end to. This has a similar meaning to the expression \u300c\u5207\u308a\u304c\u306a\u3044\u300d for things that have no cut-off point and seems to be endless. As you can see by the examples, you just take the stem<\/a> of the verb and attach \u300c\u304d\u308c\u306a\u3044\u300d .<\/p>\n

\uff11\uff09\u3053\u3093\u306a\u306b\u305f\u304f\u3055\u3093\u98df\u3079\u304d\u308c\u306a\u3044<\/em>\u3088\u3002
\n– I can’t eat this much (you know).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\uff12\uff09\u3069\u3046\u9811\u5f35\u3063\u3066\u3082\u3001\u3053\u306e\u5bbf\u984c\u306f\u7d76\u5bfe\u3084\u308a\u304d\u308c\u306a\u3044<\/em>\u3088\u3002
