This allowed us to talk about things that people have said, heard, thought, and more. We also took a look at some examples sentences that used \u300c\u3068\u300d and \u300c<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u8a00\u3046<\/span>\u300d to describe how to say something in Japanese and even what to call oneself. In this section, we will learn that with \u300c\u3068\u300d, we can use \u300c<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d in a similar fashion to define, describe, and generally just talk about the thing itself. For instance, we had the following example, which Alice used to introduce herself.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span title=\"\u308f\u305f\u3057 - me, myself, I\" class=\"popup\">\u79c1<\/span>\u306f\u30a2\u30ea\u30b9<em>\u3068<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3044\u307e\u3059<\/span><\/em>\u3002<br \/>\nI am called Alice. (lit: As for me, you say Alice.)\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThis sentence pattern is probably one of the first things beginner Japanese students learn in the classroom. In this case, the verb \u300c<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d doesn&#8217;t mean that somebody actually said something. Rather, Alice is saying that people in general say &#8220;Alice&#8221; when referring to her. While using kanji for \u300c<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d is perfectly acceptable, in this case, since nothing is actually being said, using hiragana is also common.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis idea of describing what a person is known or referred to as can also be extended to objects and places. We can essentially define and identify anything we want by using \u300c\u3068\u3044\u3046\u300d in this manner. However, we can take this idea even further by attaching two relative clauses. At this point, \u300c<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d is so abstract that it doesn&#8217;t even really have a meaning. When a relative clause is encapsulated with \u300c\u3068\u300d, you must have a verb to go along with it and \u300c<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d is simply being used as a generic verb to enable us to talk about any relative clause. This allows us to describe and explain just about anything ranging from a single word to complete sentences. In this case, we use \u300c<span title=\"\u3053\u3046 - like this\" class=\"popup\">\u3053\u3046<\/span>\u300d\u3001\u300c<span title=\"\u305d\u3046 - like that\" class=\"popup\">\u305d\u3046<\/span>\u300d\u3001\u300c<span title=\"\u3042\u3042 - like that\" class=\"popup\">\u3042\u3042<\/span>\u300d\u3001and \u300c<span title=\"\u3069\u3046 - how\" class=\"popup\">\u3069\u3046<\/span>\u300d, which when combined with \u300c<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d means &#8220;this way, &#8220;that way&#8221;, &#8220;that way (far away in an abstract sense)&#8221; We already saw that we can use  \u300c\u3063\u3066\u300d to replace \u300c\u3068<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d as well. However, since we just learned how to use \u300c\u3068<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d to do much more than just simply say something, there is a limit to just how much you can leave out. By convention, it is used to express disagreement or dissatisfaction usually to whine, complain, or to make an excuse but you can&#8217;t tell what it means just from looking at it. I have to go too.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn some cases, the small \u300c\u3064\u300d is left out and just \u300c\u3066\u300d is used instead of \u300c\u3063\u3066\u300d. This is done (as is usually the case for slang) in order to make things easier to say. While I do not plan on covering all of them here, you can check out casual patterns and slang in the miscellaneous section for yet even more slang derived from \u300c\u3068<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d.<\/p>\n<p>The last thing I&#8217;m am going to briefly mention here is the use of \u300c<span title=\"\u3086\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3086\u3046<\/span>\u300d instead of \u300c<span title=\"\u3044\u3046 - to say\" class=\"popup\">\u3044\u3046<\/span>\u300d.
