There are many different customs involving giving and receiving gifts (<span title=\"\u304a\u305b\u3044\u307c - year-end presents\" class=\"popup\">\u304a\u6b73\u66ae<\/span>\u3001<span title=\"\u304a\u3061\u3085\u3046\u3052\u3093 - Bon Festival gifts\" class=\"popup\">\u304a\u4e2d\u5143<\/span>\u3001etc.) and when Japanese people go traveling, you can be sure that they&#8217;re going to be picking up souvenirs to take back as gifts.  Even when attending marriages or funerals, people are expected to give a certain amount of money as a gift to help fund the ceremony. You can see why properly learning how to express the giving and receiving of favors and items is a very important and useful skill. For some reason, the proper use of \u300c<span title=\"\u3042\u3052\u308b - to give, to raise\" class=\"popup\">\u3042\u3052\u308b<\/span>\u300d\u3001\u300c<span title=\"\u304f\u308c\u308b - to give\" class=\"popup\">\u304f\u308c\u308b<\/span>\u300d\u3001and \u300c<span title=\"\u3082\u3089\u3046 - to receive\" class=\"popup\">\u3082\u3089\u3046<\/span>\u300d has always haunted people studying Japanese as being horribly complex and intractable. This applies to all the other sections in this lesson as well.\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span title=\"\u304f\u308b\u307e - car\" class=\"popup\">\u8eca<\/span>\u3092<em><span title=\"\u304b\u3046 - buy\" class=\"popup\">\u8cb7\u3063\u3066<\/span><span title=\"\u3042\u3052\u308b - to give, to raise\" class=\"popup\">\u3042\u3052\u308b<\/span><\/em>\u3088\u3002<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll give you the favor of buying a car.\n<\/li>\n<li><span title=\"\u304b\u308f\u308a - substitute\" class=\"popup\">\u4ee3\u308f\u308a<\/span>\u306b<em><span title=\"\u3044\u304f - to go\" class=\"popup\">\u884c\u3063\u3066<\/span><span title=\"\u3042\u3052\u308b - to give, to raise\" class=\"popup\">\u3042\u3052\u308b<\/span><\/em>\u3002<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll give you the favor of going in your place.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For third-person, this verb is used when the speaker is looking at it from the giver&#8217;s point of view. You shouldn&#8217;t use this type of \u300c\u3084\u308b\u300d for people because it is used when looking down on someone and can be offensive.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span title=\"\u3044\u306c - dog\" class=\"popup\">\u72ac<\/span>\u306b<span title=\"\u3048\u3055 - food for animals\" class=\"popup\">\u990c<\/span>\u3092<em><span title=\"\u3084\u308b - to do\" class=\"popup\">\u3084\u3063\u305f<\/span><\/em>\uff1f<br \/>\nDid you give the dog food?\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here, \u300c<span title=\"\u3084\u308b - to do\" class=\"popup\">\u3084\u308b<\/span>\u300d does not mean &#8220;to do&#8221; but &#8220;to give&#8221;. (looking at it from the dad&#8217;s point of view)\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nThe following diagram illustrates the direction of giving from the point of view of the speaker.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: auto; display:block; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.guidetojapanese.org\/images\/favordiag.gif\" alt=\"Favor Diagram\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>From the speaker&#8217;s point of view, all the giving done to others &#8220;go up&#8221; to everybody else while the giving done by everybody else &#8220;goes down&#8221; to the speaker.  This is probably related to the fact that there is an identical verb \u300c<span title=\"\u3042\u3052\u308b - to raise\" class=\"popup\">\u4e0a\u3052\u308b<\/span>\u300d meaning &#8220;to raise&#8221; that contains the character for &#8220;above&#8221; \uff08<span title=\"\u3046\u3048 - above\" class=\"popup\">\u4e0a<\/span>\uff09 and that the honorific version of \u300c<span title=\"\u304f\u308c\u308b - to give\" class=\"popup\">\u304f\u308c\u308b<\/span>\u300d is \u300c<span title=\"\u304f\u3060\u3055\u308b - to give (hon)\" class=\"popup\">\u4e0b\u3055\u308b<\/span>\u300d  with the character for down \uff08<span title=\"\u3057\u305f - below\" class=\"popup\">\u4e0b<\/span>\uff09. This restriction allows us to make certain deductions from vague sentences like the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span title=\"\u305b\u3093\u305b\u3044 - teacher\" class=\"popup\">\u5148\u751f<\/span>\u304c<span title=\"\u304a\u3057\u3048\u308b - to teach, to inform\" class=\"popup\">\u6559\u3048\u3066<\/span><em><span title=\"\u3042\u3052\u308b - to give, to raise\" class=\"popup\">\u3042\u3052\u308b<\/span><\/em>\u3093\u3067\u3059\u304b\u3002<br \/>\nTeacher, will you be the one to give favor of teaching to&#8230; [anybody other than the speaker]?\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nBecause all giving done to the speaker must always use \u300c<span title=\"\u304f\u308c\u308b - to give\" class=\"popup\">\u304f\u308c\u308b<\/span>\u300d, we know that the teacher must be doing it for someone else and <i>not the speaker<\/i>.  The speaker is also looking at it from the teacher&#8217;s point of view as doing a favor for someone else.\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span title=\"\u305b\u3093\u305b\u3044 - teacher\" class=\"popup\">\u5148\u751f<\/span>\u304c<span title=\"\u304a\u3057\u3048\u308b - to teach, to inform\" class=\"popup\">\u6559\u3048\u3066<\/span><em><span title=\"\u304f\u308c\u308b - to give\" class=\"popup\">\u304f\u308c\u308b<\/span><\/em>\u3093\u3067\u3059\u304b\u3002<br \/>\nTeacher, will you be the one to give favor of teaching to&#8230; [anybody including the speaker]?\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because the giver is not the speaker, the teacher is either giving to the speaker or anyone else.
