The important thing to remember is that \u300c\u65b9\u300d is a noun while \u300c\u3088\u308a\u300d is a particle. Another particle often used in making comparisons is \u300c\u307b\u3069\u300d, which describes the extent of something.<\/p>\n<h3>Example<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\u65b9 \u3010\u307b\u3046\u3011 &#8211; direction; side<\/li>\n<li>\uff5e\u3088\u308a (particle) &#8211; rather than \uff5e<\/li>\n<li>\uff5e\u307b\u3069 (particle) &#8211; extent of \uff5e<\/li>\n<li>\u3069\u3061\u3089 &#8211; which way<\/li>\n<li>\u72ac \u3010\u3044\u306c\u3011 &#8211; dog<\/li>\n<li>\u732b \u3010\u306d\u3053\u3011 &#8211; cat<\/li>\n<li>\u82f1\u8a9e \u3010\u3048\u3044\u30fb\u3054\u3011 &#8211; English (language)<\/li>\n<li>\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e \u3010\u306b\u30fb\u307b\u3093\u30fb\u3054\u3011 &#8211; Japanese (language)<\/li>\n<li>\u96e3\u3057\u3044 \u3010\u3080\u305a\u304b\u30fb\u3057\u3044\u3011(i-adj) &#8211; difficult<\/li>\n<li>\u601d\u3046 \u3010\u304a\u3082\u30fb\u3046\u3011(u-verb) &#8211; to think<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>\u72ac\u3068\u732b\u3001\u3069\u3061\u3089\u306e<em>\u65b9<\/em>\u304c\u597d\u304d\uff1f<br \/>\nWhich do (you) like more, dog or cat? (lit: Dog and cat, which side is (the) one (you like)?)<\/li>\n<li>\u72ac\u306e<em>\u65b9<\/em>\u304c\u732b<em>\u3088\u308a<\/em>\u597d\u304d\u3002<br \/>\nLike dog more than cat. (lit: Like the side of dog rather than cat.)<\/li>\n<li>\u72ac\u306e<em>\u65b9<\/em>\u304c\u732b<em>\u3088\u308a<\/em>\u5acc\u3044\u3002<br \/>\nHate dog more than cat. (lit: Hate the side of dog rather than cat.)<\/li>\n<li>\u732b\u306f\u3001\u72ac<em>\u307b\u3069<\/em>\u597d\u304d\u3058\u3083\u306a\u3044\u3002<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t like cat as much as dog. (lit: Don&#8217;t like cat to extent of dog.)<\/li>\n<li>\u82f1\u8a9e\u3068\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\u3001\u3069\u3061\u3089\u306e\u65b9\u304c\u96e3\u3057\u3044\u3068\u601d\u3044\u307e\u3059\u304b\uff1f<br \/>\nWhich do (you) think is harder, English or Japanese? (lit: English and Japanese, which side is harder (you) think?)\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Cats or Dogs<\/h3>\n<p>\u30a2\u30ea\u30b9\uff1a\u732b\u3068\u72ac\u3001<em>\u3069\u3061\u3089\u306e\u65b9\u304c\u597d\u304d<\/em>\uff1f<br \/>\nAlice: Which do (you) like more, dog or cat<\/p>\n<p>\u308a\u30fc\uff1a\u50d5\u306f\u3001\u3069\u3061\u3089\u3082\u597d\u304d\u3002<br \/>\nLee: I like both. (lit: Like either way also.)<\/p>\n<p>\u30b8\u30e7\u30f3\uff1a<em>\u72ac\u306e\u65b9\u304c\u3044\u3044<\/em>\u3093\u3058\u3083\u306a\u3044\uff1f<em>\u732b\u3088\u308a\u982d\u304c\u3044\u3044<\/em>\u304b\u3089\u3002<br \/>\nJohn: Isn&#8217;t dog better.
