There are several different ways to try something in Japanese including making an effort toward something, making an attempt at something, and trying something out to see what happens.<\/p>\n

Striving for a goal<\/h2>\n

In order to express “try” as striving toward a goal, we use the same \u300c\u3088\u3046\u300d we learned in the last section to describe the manner or appearance of the way we want to act. In this case, we use the verb \u300c\u3059\u308b\u300d (meaning “to do”) and the \u300c\u306b\u300d target particle to do toward the manner or appearance of the verb clause.<\/p>\n

  1. \u30bf\u30d0\u30b3\u3092\u5438\u308f\u306a\u3044\u3088\u3046\u306b\u3059\u308b<\/em>\u3002
    \nTry not to smoke cigarettes.

  2. \u7518\u3044\u7269\u3092\u98df\u3079\u306a\u3044\u3088\u3046\u306b\u3057\u3066\u3044\u308b<\/em>\u3002

  3. \u3082\u3063\u3068\u904b\u52d5\u3092\u3059\u308b\u3088\u3046\u306b\u3057\u3066\u3044\u305f<\/em>\u3051\u3069\u3001\u3059\u3050\u3042\u304d\u3089\u3081\u305f\u3002
    \nWas trying to exercise a lot more but soon gave up.
    \n(lit: Was doing toward manner of doing more exercise but soon gave up.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Achieving an action<\/h2>\n

    If you use the same grammar as before but with the verb \u300c\u306a\u308b\u300d (meaning “to become”) instead of \u300c\u3059\u308b\u300d, we can describe reaching the state of the verb.<\/p>\n

    1. \u30bf\u30d0\u30b3\u3092\u5438\u308f\u306a\u3044\u3088\u3046\u306b\u306a\u308b<\/em>\u3002
      \n(It) became so that (I) don’t smoke.
      \n(lit: Become manner of not smoking.)<\/li>\n
    2. \u6bce\u65e5\u904b\u52d5\u3057\u305f\u304b\u3089\u7c21\u5358\u306b\u592a\u3089\u306a\u3044\u3088\u3046\u306b\u306a\u3063\u305f<\/em>\u3002
      \n(I) exercised every day so (it) became so that (I) won’t get fat easily.<\/li>\n
    3. \uff12\u5e74\u9593\u65e5\u672c\u306b\u4f4f\u3093\u3067\u3044\u305f\u304b\u3089\u3001\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\u304c\u8a71\u305b\u308b\u3088\u3046\u306b\u306a\u308a\u307e\u3057\u305f<\/em>\u3002
      \n(I) lived in Japan for two years so (I) became able to speak Japanese.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Making an attempt<\/h2>\n

      The volitional form can also be used to describe an attempt or effort to do a single action. In this case, we use the volitional form followed by \u300c\u3068\u300d and the verb \u300c\u3059\u308b\u300d (“to do”).<\/p>\n

        \nEven though (it’s a) holiday, (my) parents don’t try (make an effort) to go anywhere so (it’s) boring.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Experimenting<\/h2>\n

          A third way to express trying (not as a goal or effort) is to do something as an experiment. For example, trying out something for the first time. This grammar is expressed by changing the verb to the te-form and attaching the verb \u300c\u307f\u308b\u300d (“to see”).<\/p>\n
