We already know how to describe things as easy or difficult regular adjectives such as \u300c\u7c21\u5358\u300d or \u300c\u96e3\u3057\u3044\u300d but in this section, we’ll learn another way to describe an action as easy or difficult.<\/p>\n

Easy actions<\/h2>\n

To describe an action as easy, attach \u300c\u3084\u3059\u3044\u300d to the verb stem. The result is treated just like an i-adjective.<\/p>\n

    Difficult actions<\/h2>\n

    Similarly, to describe a difficult action, we can attach \u300c\u306b\u304f\u3044\u300d to the verb stem.<\/p>\n

    1. \u3053\u306e\u6559\u79d1\u66f8\u306f\u3061\u3087\u3063\u3068\u5206\u304b\u308a\u306b\u304f\u3044<\/em>\u3002
      \nThis textbook is (a) little hard to understand.<\/li>\n
    2. \u3061\u3087\u3063\u3068\u9ad8\u304f\u3066\u3082\u3044\u3044\u3067\u3059\u304b\u3089\u3001\u58ca\u308c\u306b\u304f\u3044<\/em>\u65b9\u304c\u3044\u3044\u3067\u3059\u3002
      \n(It’s) ok even if (it’s a) little expensive so (it’s) better that (it’s) hard to break.<\/li>\n
    3. \u30b9\u30c6\u30fc\u30ad\u306f\u5207\u308c\u5473\u92ed\u3044\u30b9\u30c6\u30fc\u30ad\u30ca\u30a4\u30d5\u304c\u306a\u3044\u3068\u98df\u3079\u306b\u304f\u3044<\/em>\u3088\u306d\u3002
      \nIf (you) don’t have (a) sharp steak knife, steak is hard to eat.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      We can also use either \u300c\u3065\u3089\u3044\u300d or \u300c\u304c\u305f\u3044\u300d to express difficulty, which have the following differences in nuance and usages.<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. \u300c\u306b\u304f\u3044\u300d is the most generic version.<\/li>\n
      2. \u300c\uff5e\u3065\u3089\u3044\u300d, which comes from \u300c\u8f9b\u3044\u300d(painful), is more subjective.<\/li>\n
      3. \u300c\uff5e\u304c\u305f\u3044\u300d is mostly limited to emotions and thoughts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        All three are attached to the verb stem and the result becomes just like an i-adjective.<\/p>\n

          \nThese shoes are cute but (it’s) hard to walk so (I) don’t wear (them) much.<\/li>\n
        3. \u4fe1\u3058\u304c\u305f\u3044<\/em>\u304b\u3082\u3057\u308c\u307e\u305b\u3093\u304c\u3001\u672c\u5f53\u306e\u8a71\u3067\u3059\u3002
